Girls in Computer Science

Free computer science workshops for young girls in 8th grade and under with the goal to spark interest and introduce them to programming and artificial intelligence.

In the field of computer science, there tend to be more males than females. In fact, females make up only about 20% of employees at large companies like Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and Apple. The problem is that many girls, especially young girls, aren't exposed to the wonders of STEM. I want to change that by cultivating a love for technology and computer science in young girls and encouraging them to pursue their interests in STEM. To do this, I am providing workshops in Scratch, Java, Python, and Artificial Intelligence and spreading awareness about the various opportunities and paths in computer science. I believe that nurturing an interest in STEM for young girls will help them see themselves as the future leaders of tomorrow.

I hope to see you at these workshops and have an amazing journey!

The workshops will be in May, June, and later on in summer break. Please check the schedule tab for workshops dates.

About me

My name is Sanya Gupta and I am a junior at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. Since middle school, I have always been interested in computer science and coding, and have taken a variety of courses in school to pursue my passion. Out of academics, I love to read, play the clarinet and bass clarinet, watch Netflix shows, and crochet. I started these workshops in hope that younger girls will gain more interest in computer science, and turned this into my Girl Scout Gold Award Project.
